Στη νεότερη ιστορία της Καρύστου αξιοσημείωτη είναι η διαμόρφωση της σύγχρονης πόλης από τον Βαυαρό αρχιτέκτονα Μπίρμπαχ, μετά από εντολή μάλιστα του βασιλιά Όθωνα γι’ αυτό και η πόλη ονομαζόταν Οθωνούπολη μέχρι το 1862, οπότε και ξαναπήρε το αρχαίο όνομα της. Έτσι η Κάρυστος απέκτησε ένα άριστο ρυμοτομικό σχέδιο, με μεγάλους δρόμους, πλατείες και μια θαυμάσια προκυμαία. Να και ένας οδοστρωτήρας εκείνης της εποχής.

During the recent history of Karystos, the urban planning of the modern city that was designed by the Bavarian architect Birbach is remarkable. This was ordered by that King Othon and that is why the city was named Othonoupoli until 1862, when it was renamed with the old name. That is how Karystos aquired an excellent street-plan, with large roads, squares and marvelous seafront. Here you can see a steamroller of that period.

Το Μπούρτζι, το παραλιακό αυτό φρούριο χτίστηκε στα μέσα του 13ου αιώνα από τους Ενετούς. Είχε 24 τηλεβόλα και 30 φρουρούς με ένα πύραρχο. Βρίσκεται στην ανατολική άκρη του λιμανιού και περιλαμβάνει έκταση 400 περίπου τετραγωνικών μέτρων. Είναι χτισμένο με πέτρες, πωρόλιθους και αρκετά μάρμαρα που άνηκαν σε αρχαία κτίρια. Η πύλη είναι χαμηλή και θολωτή και σφαλίζει με σιδερόδετη πόρτα. Ψηλά πάνω από αυτή το τείχος έχει τρύπα προς τα έξω και κάτω για να ρίχνουν ζεματιστό λάδι κατά την άμυνα.

Bourtzi, this waterfront castle was built in the middle of the 13th century by the Venetians. It had 24 cannons and 30 guards with one captain. It is located at the eastern end of the port and it occupies an area of about 400 square meters. It is constructed with stones, limestones and a lot of marbles which belonged to ancient houses. It’s gate is low and vault and seals with iron bound door. On top of it there is a whole towards out and down so that they could pour hot oil during the defense.

Με αφορμή το πρωτόγνωρο κύμα απεργιών πείνας από τους κρατούμενους στις Ελληνικές φυλακές αλλά και την εγκληματική αποσιώπησή του από τα κυρίαρχα ΜΜΕ, για τη Δημοκρατία και την προάσπιση των βασικών ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων καλούμε όλους όσους διατηρούν μπλογκς, διαδικτυακά φόρα και όχι μόνο να δημοσιεύσουν ταυτόχρονα και συντονισμένα στις 20 Νοεμβρίου 2008, ημέρα Πέμπτη, το κείμενο στο Κάλεσμα: “Όχι στο Όνομά μας” και όλους τους χρήστες του διαδικτύου να το υπογράψουν.
Prisoners in Greek prisons are deprived of basic human rights and dignity as human beings. This has led to an unprecedented wave of hunger strikes, that has been sweeping all Greek prisons from the 3rd of November, whereas the mainstream media hold total silence on the issue.
